Staff Software Engineer

Context

Malt is Europe's leading freelance marketplace, connecting over 1,000,000 freelancers with 100,000+ companies. A team of 600 Malters across 6 European countries. Lists of missions and responsibilities are non-exhaustive.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, plan, and drive the execution of large, complex, and sometimes high-risk engineering projects that often span across multiple teams or systems.
• Architectural design: design, develop, and implement scalable, efficient, and robust software solutions and systems.
• Set technical vision: define the short-term and long-term technical strategy and roadmap for a critical area, domain, or the organization's technology infrastructure.
• Raise the bar: drive the adoption of best practices, coding standards, and high-quality engineering processes, including thorough code reviews; provide architectural guidance and foster operational excellence.
• Mentorship and coaching: provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to engineers, particularly Senior and mid-level engineers.
• Coordination and alignment: act as a glue person, coordinating technical efforts and communication across multiple squads, departments, and stakeholders (Product Managers, Engineering Managers).
• Influence the engineering culture: champion ownership, excellence, and speed.

About you

• 10+ years of professional experience in software development, with a first experience in a product company (SaaS, fintech, marketplace).
• Highly proficient in Java or Kotlin, comfortable navigating complex backend architecture, APIs, and data models.
• Passionate about AI topics, up to date with the latest developments; you have already worked on AI topics, for internal productivity or in a product.
• Clear leadership: you work effectively in uncertain and evolving environments, managing the interaction between technical objectives and business priorities.
• Technical mentor: strong craft skills to disseminate best practices and coach classic developers or ML engineers.
• Product mindset: curious about the why behind features, proactive in proposing improvements, owning delivery from A to Z.
• Resourceful under severe staffing constraints; excellent ownership and problem-solving skills, high degree of agency.
• Excellent written and oral communication in English (French is a valuable bonus).

Recruitment process

1. First call with the Talent Acquisition Business Partner: background, aspirations, questions (45 minutes).
2. Interview with the future manager (VP Engineering): experience and specifics of the role (60 minutes).
3. Technical case and debrief with staff engineers: mastery of technical and architectural subjects (2 hours).
4. Final interview with the CTO on Malt's long-term vision, at the Paris office.
